This module focuses on key areas of EFL/ESL methodology. Which explores the various approaches and methodologies of TESOL which are essential to programme, select and develop appropriate materials and assess student skills and achievements.
If provides insights into current research finding and their application to the teaching of language and skills in participans' own contexts. It develops a critical understanding of the key dimensions of teaching such as: task design, skill and language development, and lesson and course structures.
Learner-centered Teaching( Language Teaching)[ED 996]
Students will be introduced to the principles that inform the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. They will explore the principles and range of resources that teaching, and will develop their skills in planning, implementing and evaluating lessons.
Issues related to program design, including needs analysis, frameworks for the development of curriculum, assessment frameworks and procedures, and approaches to syllabus design will be explored.
Approaches to English Grammar (English Grammar for Teaching) [ED 1056]
A functional approach to English grammar, examining the uses of the major grammatical constructions, Includes analysis of language of native and of non-native speakers of English. An overview of English grammar will be provided. Particular emphasis will be give to problem areas for ESL students. Some finding in the research literature about the learning of specific features of English grammar will be reviewed and the application of these findings to teaching methodology and material design discussed.
Language Curriculum, Materials Development and Assessment [ED 002]
In this subject, key issues in the development of materials and curriculum for language for development. Students will be introduced to basic principles and trends in materials and theoretical perspective. The relationship of materials and syllabus to wider issues of the nature of language and curriculum will be explored and considered in the context of assessment goals and procedures. Some experience of language teaching would be preferable.
Second Language Acquisition for EFL Teachers (Second Language Acquisition) [ED005]
The subject is an introduction to the principles and theories of second language acquistion and their implications for language teaching. It examines competing models and explanations of second language acquisition. The development of a variety of languages other than English are considered. By comparing findings from studies of various languages, differing explanations for the underlying system and features of English interlanguage, development are evaluated. A model is developed to accommodate data from both child and adult second language acquisition are considered. A principled basis for the consideration of classroom-based interlanguage development is proposed.
Introduction to Linguistics & Sociolinguistics( Sociolinguistics in Language Teaching) [ED1067]
In this subject students will explore some of the ways in which language is actually used in context in different cultures. The emphasis is on understanding and describing how people actually make use of the language and how this impacts on communication and miscommunication, particularly between native speakers and learners of a language. Some of the theoretical and practical issues. in the investigation of authentic language use will be tackled and the practical implications for teachers, language curriculum developers and others involved I interaction with people from other cultures will be explored.
Testing and Evaluation (Analysing English for TESOL) [ED1048]
This subject provides teachers of English as a second or foreign language and other teachers with an introduction to English phonology and other aspects of spoken language in relation to practical language teaching and the analysis of areas of difficulty for learners. It will cover the basics of phonemic analysis and transcription, together with analysis of other aspects of the sound system of connected speech in English and of language use in spoken interaction. Students will develop skills in analyzing both target-like pronunciation and the difficulties experienced by learners of English. Practical approaches to teaching will be examined

This subject aims to acquaint students with contemporary theories of educational administration and to use these in approaches to solving practical problems. Special attention is directed to consultative and participative leadership styles, communication, motivation and job satisfaction, group relationships, decision-making, organizational culture and school community relations
Issues in Communicative Language Teaching (Methods of Teaching) [ED1069]
In this subject students will develop teaching methods appropriate to the context of practical experience. They will be assisted to acquire the methods of teaching needed for effective transmission of appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes in a range of practical contexts. They will be coached and given feedback on their own teaching.
Practicum in TESOL [ED411]
This subject has two major components observation and practical experience in language teaching and program develop for specific groups of students of learning English as a second or foreign language. Occasional components, but the work of the subject is mainly undertaken on location in a teaching placement.
